Best Restaurant on Isla Mujeres?

The argument can be made that Lolo Lorena is one of the best restaurants on Isla Mujeres. It is certainly the most interesting. Serving a limited number of people (maximum of sixteen) with a set menu that changes nightly is nothing new, but when you add the eclectic setting, the ability to bring your own wine without a corkage fee, and the high quality of the food, this is the place for serious eaters.

Isla Mujeres Whale Sharks – But, Not Many

Every summer brings the whale sharks to waters north of Isla Mujeres and north and east of Isla Holbox. A vibrant tourism industry has surround the discovery of this huge fish nearly ten years ago. Last year we saw quite a few. This year’s trip we could count the whale sharks on one hand, and this is the sad theme of this story.

Los Aguachiles in Playa

We love working in Playa del Carmen for many reasons. Reason #1 is the amazing variety of restaurants.

Last weekend we discovered Los Aguachiles, and oh what a discovery. Top notch seafood tacos and tostadas. Fresh! Fresh! Fresh!

Eventually you'll need a fork for the ceviche tostada

The ceviche was a good as any I have had anywhere and the different preparations for shrimp and fish were mind boggling. Micro greens on tacos? You got it. Six different sauces at the table: chile de arbol with tamarindo, chipotle mayonesa, and habanero-strawberry are just three of the choices.

We can’t remember the last time we went to a restaurant along the Riviera Maya and there was a line to get in! ! The line started soon after we arrived at 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon and was 12 deep when we left an hour later. If we hadn’t over-ordered and over-eaten, we would have been back for dinner. The large coctel de camaron (coctel de pescado shown below) is calling my name. Luckily, we are working in Playa again this weekend.

Open daily (I think) from 12:30 – 6:30. Located on Call 34 and Avenida 25

Isla Mujeres

Where do we go when we take a break from island living? To another island!

Akal-ki at Laguna Bacalar

Laguna Bacalar in the southern part of Quintana Roo is usually overshadowed by the more popular spots to the north: Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun.

Cozumel Diving

One of our favorite Latin Journeys is right here at home in Cozumel. It takes place beneath the water.

Few experiences rival the beauty and calm of the clear, warm Caribbean waters and reefs that surround the island of Cozumel. After several years as a national park, the ocean teems with life, making every dive in each month of the year a new experience.
